Instructions for using Matrix & Element

Matrix is for Instant Messaging and Call (audio/video), what Email is for our mail system : open, decentralized and standardized.

• On a computer (not Ipad or Android devices), with Firefox or Chrome (not Internet Explorer or Safari), you go at the webapp https://app.element.io/#/login
• you change the homeserver: on the right of matrix.org, click on Edit, then select “Other homeserver” and enter : des.arbr.es
  • you enter your login (at “Email or user name”) and password (at “Password”) then click on the green button “Sign in”
  • That's it, you are connected !

• With the application (see at https://element.io/) for Android / IPhone / Ipad, or with the desktop app (windows or Mac), you need to make a small modification the first time you use the app, then the connexion will be automatic :
  • select “custom home server” or “use a custom home server” (bottom of the window)
  • modify the cell “Home server URL” and replace “https://matrix.org” by “https://des.arbr.es” (if you are on this Matrix server, if not, change with the adress of your server)
  • you can now enter your login (at “Email or user name”) and password (at “Password”) then click on “Sign in”
  • That's it, your connected ! You can click on icons/people on the left panel and start chatting or calling on the new central conversation panel.
  • next time you start the app, the login will be automatic. It's more convenient than the webapp indeed, and quicker also.

The form of your address on my server is @obama:ces.arbr.es where “obama” is your nickname and “ces.arbr.es” the address of the server where is your account (very similar to email address that would be “obama@ces.arbr.es”). You can communicate this adresse for people to contact you on Matrix (like you give your Email adress)

It is very simple, with the same logic as many other messaging apps you may be using.

You can click at people icon on the left panel and start chating or calling on the central conversation panel.
